Filling the propane tank - where in london area?

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Ricardo, Jan 21, 2016.

  1. Hi All,

I want to test my new 77 westy cooker to check if everything is OK, but I will need to fill the Propane Tank first.
Does anyone knows where I can do that in London area (East preferable).

Regarding instructions on how to fill the tank, does anyone have any?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Any petrol station that sells LPG.

I will leave it up to your own risk that filling it up with LPG and using it isn't the best way to test it!

You will need an adapter to fill up, as US fitting is different to UK.

  3. Thanks for the answer.

So You have converted yours to have a bottle in the interior of the van?

  4. No, I still use the underslung tank.

    I know I'm a hypocrite, but I haven't tested mine either!

  7. I'll explain anyway :)

You need to get an adapter like this.

    http://www.autogasshop.co.uk/lpgautogas-1-34-acme-to-ukdutch-bayonet-9-p.asp

Basically, screw fitting to bayonet fitting.

Go to petrol station that does LPG.
    Unscrew large cap on tank
    Screw adapter on
Open smaller bleed valve. About 1 turn is enough.
Take nozzle, and place flat onto adapter.
    Turn clockwise to lock.
Pull handle down on nozzle to lock further.
Go to pump and press (and hold) the button to flow LPG
    You need abut £8 worth.
STOP when gas/liquid starts coming out of the bleed valve.
Using a thick glove (gardening type glove) screw bleed valve up.
Release nozzle handle, turn anticlockwise, remove.
    Remove adapter.
    Place cap back on.

    That is basically it!

Quite scary the first time though!

  8. I'm In East London, these I use.
Shell off the A406 at barking and Ilford, Sainsburys at the open air mall near to a13/a406 junction.
    calor gas at bow roundabout.

    BP at a12 near Ilford.
Mostly there all a bit further out.

One time I filled up at Hillfoot Av. Shell in Liverpool. It blew out the seal and it snowed a whole tank of LPG all over my rear. How I laughed.
Don't force it in when it stops going in fast (so to speak)
