fibre glass repair

  1. I was talking to a mechanic today who recons that an out of shape fibre glass roof could be brought back in to shape by clamping in place and adding more sheets of fibreglass inside to hold in the right shape , do you think this might work and is it worth all the effort ?

  2. Sounds an interesting idea - not sure how close to the correct shape you could hold it? Might be easier to cut out the warped section and rebuild it with new fibreglass if it is a smaller area?

  3. its the two long sides ,at the moment they protrude over the gutters , for about 300mm from the center point

  4. If they could get the shape right, and hold it there I don't see why it wouldn't work. If it was mine I'd like to see strips of triangular foam put in, with the new fibreglass layered over the top, for extra rigidity.

  5. Also give the old fibreglass a good roughing up.

  6. I was thinking about doing it my self and renewing the bellows at the same time

  7. Your main problem will be getting the shape right and holding it there. Best way would be to cut some profiles and lay the roof into them.

  9. No probs mate. I'm not experienced myself, but I worked for a prototyping company for a while and watched the guys that know.

I'm not convinced it wouldn't spring back out again?
Dormobile roofs have a length of steel pipe about 10mm dia matted in to keep the edge straight. Quite easy to do.

  11. ^^ I like the sound of that - you could run two lengths down the sides and putting the roof in profiles then bond these on using either fibreglass or your favourite "I cant believe its no more nails" product?

As well as roughening the fibreglass it can be a good idea to use the more expensive epoxy resin as this sticks better to the existing old polyester resin than new polyester resin.

And for a fibreglass roof you can use plywood or even MDF strips as stiffeners with woven glass fabric over the top held together with the epoxy.

  13. I have the same problem with my pop top but I will run a bit of wood down the sides of the pop top so I can pull the edges were I need them and then fibre glass it all were it should be , Luckily for me I have mate that fibre glass for a living
