Afternoon all, before I completly strip out the steering column, can anyone tell me where the wire goes that should connect to the horn push button ring in the steering wheel as there is currently no wire there. the one from the horn connects to the bottom of the column (and that one is there now)..............but the one from the steering wheel is missing. does the steering wheel need to come off to connect to a slip ring some where? does the wire got to the bottom near the other one and connect to some where I've not spotted? any help greatly appreciated
I'm confused, pics? You want to know where the wire that attach's to the horn push metal ring? You mean the other end of the wire? I finish work at 2pm and will look at mine as it's all stripped down if no one can help by then. Although mines a '78, would that be the same?
sorry mate, probably didnt explain that too clearly I have the wire connected directly from the horn to the bottom of the steering column - no probs from that end with the horn push button popped out in the centre of the steering wheel, I noticed there was no wire to complete the earth return path. Under the horn push, there is a metal ring with a spade connection (which moves up and down when you push the horn) but there is no wire on the spade terminal I need to know where the wire would go which would connect to the spade terminal that sits under the horn push. I'm assuming it goes down the centre of the steering column..........but where does it connect to at the other end ?
It needs an M8 ring terminal and passes down through the rubber steering coupling and connects to the bolt holding the coupling to the steering box.
thanks mate I didnt notice that wire on mine when I took the column off, and I think my horn was working :headscratch2: .....are there variations or do they all connect to the same place? I'll have a look on thursday eve when I'm next up the garage
yup it goes through the middle of the column and attatches to the steering rubber coupler on the bottom side so its earthed use on of the 4 m8 bolts on the couple to bolt it on but make sure its on the side that is earth not the side that is insulated by the coupler
fuse box to horn horn to inside of outer steering column ring on push button down througn column to where I said completing the circuit to earth without twisting the wire when you steer. It's taken me nearly 20 years to get this straight in my mind.
well you can always watch it again ONLINE - when mrs Dub goes out http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006v5kb
The wire that goes down the steering column to the steering box earth is broken on mine and it still works too, so you might not need it if the steering column is earthed without it
Early s have a wire from the horn to a tab at the bottom of the steering outer thats a right pig to fit. Lates have a wire from the horn to the turn signal wiring loom to a copper ring under the steering wheel. Wire from horn push down steering inner tube to bolt on the rubber donut then a link wire to stering box side of donut
^^^ That explains why mine works then, mines a '75 and must have some other early bits on it apart from the sliding door, theres definitely a dangling wire at the bottom of the steering column.
All sorted? I* can take a multitude of pictures now if needs be, mind you, mine looks like a spiders nest...
