Faulty fuel gauge/ sender help!!!!!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by parhamandy, Jul 22, 2012.

  1. Hi all i am totally new to the scene and at 40 im a bit of a late starter.

Bought my first camper about 6 months ago a 2.0l twin carb 1978, fortunately it is mechanically and structurally sound but the body work is very tatty.

Now my problem- the fuel gauge was working intermittently, now it doesnt work at all. If i go through my tests that i have done hopefully someone out there will give me a steer in the right direction??

The gauge registers empty all the time, what i have tested -

The gauge to earth and the gauge registers full, as it is supposed to.
The sender to earth and it registers with some resistance/ impedance however this is in the region of meg ohms.
the voltage stabiliser is working fine.
I have tried bypassing all the wires with a temporary and it still doesnt work.

I have asked my dad who used to work on his own cars a lot and he said it could be a hole in the float so it just sinks and registers empty all the time.

Hopefully someone else can suggest something for me to try so i dont have to do all the work to replace the sender.

Any help is going to be really welcome!!!!! :-

  3. Had exactly same problem last week.

Have you removed dash cluster to check the wiring. I had to re-crimp cables and clean the ground fitting. Defo worth a look at this. Good luck

  4. Dave thanks for the info, i have tried everything my only thought is that it must be the sender as the gauge is working fine, i have checked the earth etc. i just think the impedance of the sender is to high.

i know the fuel gauge is only an ammeter, so it will only be registering milliamps so thereforethe resistance of the sender should be in the region of 100s of ohms not 1000s. I may have to take the plunge and take the engine out.
