  1. Swapping out a Neff gas hob for a very similar model - is the mounting hole likely to be the same dimensions, or do they change these things to annoy you? Standard four-burner job.

Also - what's involved in connecting the gas supply? Before you say it, I'm not going to do this myself, just wanted some idea of what's involved. Looks pretty straightforward underneath. Half hour job for a Gas Safe registered bod? Ta.

  2. Cut outs are usually around 490x560 on most hobs, shouldn't take too much for a gas safe engineer to alter the pipe work and do a drop test

  3. Oh typical customer....... It's only a 2 minute job, I would do it myself if I had the tools........ Etc etc! :)

  5. yeh, then call you in when it leaks and tell you about the mate/cowboy that fitted it but isn't answering their phone!

  6. Carry out tightness test before commencing any work on gas
remove meter and cap = 15 mins

get tools out of van = 5 mins

get / find fittings from van = 5 mins

    drink tea = 5 mins

try cooker in place to see how much clearance there is behind = 5 mins

fit sticky seal to hob and fix brackets underneath = 10 mins

connect pipework and solder etc = 5 mins

tip most of tea down the sink as it was foul = 2 mins

Carryout tightness test on completion of work = 10 mins

reload the van = 10 mins

go home and complete a notification on line = 10 mins

    Total = 82 mins

That's on a good day .if hob and cooker fit and you don't have to move a heap of garage stuff to get to the meter and the customer doesn't want to show you old photos and list all their medical complaints

  8. Let's not forget the conversation where you have to explain to a very confused customer that because the idiot kitchen designer/fitter can't be bothered to check the regs they can't have their shiny new hob fitted as all the clearances are wrong.

Or the initial tightness/let by fails and they expect you to magically know where the leak is. Or the old hob was connected on a flexi and they can't understand why you won't reuse it.

    I fecking hate customers

  9. Probably best avoided...

Why don't you just cut off the old hob and pipe and clamp a rubber hose from it to the new hob?

  14. That's genius.

"Perhaps whilst you get the kettle on I could just hacksaw a bit of your garden hose off and use that. Bish bosh. Easy two hundred quid. "

I had a call out to remove and cap off an old gas hob. Apparently John Lewis were meant to do it but had been and said the meter was unusual and they couldn't do it!

On arrival I checked the meter, bit old and governor big but not unusual. Drop test sound. Turned off gas went to check out hob. It had been fitted with a 15mm in line water isolator!!!!

The old boy couldn't remember who had done it. I'm pretty certain John Lewis people shouldn't have just walked away from it

I should have sent a photo to be in Gas Engineer mag :)

  17. Clowns. That's the worst bit about being a tradesman. It's the point where it's Friday afternoon, you call in to do a simple job, discover someone else's bodge and then it's your responsibility as last man on scene , you can't leave it and bang goes any plans you had for the weekend.
