I just drove back from fishing and the bus was backfiring through the exhaust on inspection seems the header to tailpipe gasket has failed yet again, I know they get hot but this is the 2nd one in 6 months, I have a stainless steel quiet pack exhaust any suggestions

It's not the exhaust I'm talking about its the gasket, I know they are only a couple of quid but they should last longer

Did you retighten the joint after letting it warm up initially?

We had to do this with our Vintage Speed a few times, warm, tighten, warm, tighten some more

No I didn't do that I'll get a new gasket and I'll try that thank you, did you use any exhaust sealant,?

I didn't use any sealant but others have mentioned I ought to have done.

I forget who recommended what, its was quite a soft ish one, good for high temperatures and stays soft to maintain the seal, from memory.

They're two tin plates with gunk between? And has the gunk blown out?
Probably a poor quality gasket if it has?

  8. That's for type 4, Barry, don't you have a type 1? It might be the same gasket, for all I know, but wouldn't want you to order the wrong part.

  9. Ah sorry.. not enough coffee yet..

Is there anything holding the silencer or just that joint where the gasket fails?

I have a 2ltr T4, I think they are sending me the wrong gasket it fits perfectly but it looks as if its made of card I would of thought an exhaust gasket should be metal, o this is all too much I need to go back fishing

  12. Oh, that's clever in an early, kinda the best of two worlds

I would agree, the CSP exhaust I put on the Bug came with copper gaskets, and the old exhaust I took off had copper gaskets. Haven't needed to get that far on the Bus.

@zedders this is what just Kampers sent me I've just rang them and they say they are correct for my exhaust but they just burn to nothing

They don't look as good as the type rob.e posted above, I'd try elsewhere for one like that.

My JK exhaust gasket lasted until I had to take it off after 8 years. You are probably not torueing down the nuts enough, its wobbling around and falliing out.

Yes it looks like cardboard but it does the job..

When I came to refit the exhaust, I smeared the fragments in exhaust paste and it has done 700 miles without truble since.
