Engine running temperature

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Rustydiver, May 23, 2012.

  1. What temperature range should a Type 4 engine be running at? Fitted to a van it was designed to go in. IE a late bay.

Now bearing in mind that mines fitted in a split screen pickup, with less open vent area, no engine seal and a very tight engine bay, should I see any different.

It's been fitted to the van for the last 10 years and has ran all ok, but was intrigued as I've just fitted a gauge.

ahhh the worry gauge..... when mine had tin missing it sat at 370 to 400 degrees (cylinder head temp) which was way too high, now the tin is on it sits at 270 to 300 and if i'm going up a hill laden up maybe 350, this i belive is acceptable.

  3. Rick I still work in old money 0c.
I'm trying to work it out.

soz that's in farenheight cos it's american dials.

  5. My advice would be to remove the gauge and have another 10 years trouble free motoring as this is all going down the large sump external cooler route and then it will break down when a hose splits!

On the hottest of days our westy runs at 210'F - thats coming up the M5 out of Bristol on the climb up to the M42 junction, never seen it above this temperature!
