Engine out or gear box! To replace clutch

  1. Hi all

Is it quicker to drop the gear box out to change the clutch.

  2. Engine out cos the clutch bolts to the flywheel and don't tnink you can just drop the geArbox.

Getting the engine out is a simple job to do, yea I know everyone does say that but it is.

I did my first last year and dropped it out again a few weeks ago and put it back in by myself.

  3. I know the engine is easy to remove but I have to do it on a shingle drive and thought I could lift the G/B on my own without using a trolley jack.

  4. Engine out, I'm afraid.

  5. Get a wood board for the trolley and yourself...

  6. I have my van on axle stands with big wooden blocks under them for more height as it gives more clearance when getting the engine out , I do mine on my own with a trolly jack and a car creeper that's been changed slightly changed I've took the padded area of and just put boards on it so when I lower the engine on the jack I can leave the board at one side of it and get it strait on then move it out from under the van , good luck

One thing - you don't need to drag the engine right clear of the van to change the clutch or the flywheel oil seal if it's difficult. So you don't need the van so high. You should be able to seperate the engine from the gearbox, spin it round a bit and do the job like that. No fun, but doable.

  8. Thanks all, going to do it Friday night, off camping on Sunday so hope all goes well.

Can I ask why you're changing the clutch? Only I've never seen a worn out one. They generally start to slip due to oil contamination and get chucked way before the end of their useful life.

If you clutch has been slipping and you found oil in the gearbox bell housing, I suggest you replace the flywheel oil seal and o-ring as well. Easy job on your type of engine. :)

  14. Thought my self that it's not that worn,it started crunching in reverse tried adjusting with no joy.
No oil leaking from main seal though.
