Engine out job

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by yorkieman, Nov 15, 2020.

  1. True, with the van on ramps, when you are putting the engine back in, and it's balanced on top of a trolley jack, it's pretty nerve wracking tilting it forward to get it on the input shaft. I always employ a helper to work the jack, while I steady the engine and swear a lot.
One idea to get the engine out from under the van, that I have used twice now, is two thick bits of polythene, like moisture barrier. Put the two sheets down, one on top of the other, Lower the engine onto a board, then onto the top sheet and pull it out. Slides out nicely. Getting it back under the van was the reverse. I sat on the drive and pushed with my feet.

  2. Yep, van on ramps not so hot, IMHO, due to the angle. Bit of straight jacking is fine.

Yes rear tin out, throttle, heater cables and fuel pipe disconnected.
Mine is both on a ramp and a nose down slope. Its still doable, the bus is so much safer on its wheels than on stands.
On hot days tarmac flows under axle stand feet.

If you leave the rear support bar on, then its harder to line up but it cant go in as many directions suddenly.

I have done it probably 20 times over the last 10 years. By myself. Even lifted a longblock by myself into a Peugeot 307SW (flat van like loading into tail gate no stupid boot lip, another reason for keeping it for 16 years..).

I am always reminded of some friends who told me of the day they asked neighbours about how their son was doing with his Subaru. It turned out he wasnt because it had fallen on him and crushed him to death.

And although its not going to happen with a bus,I have lifted a Mini 1000 back end off axle stands trying to undo a tight bolt...

  4. Just in case you're in a cross over .. you might have a removable rear apron .. .. that was handy on my '71 when I was young and foolish and could wriggle the engine out on my chest ..can hardly budge the type 4 without wheels now

It is indeed, it took me ages to find the pic.

    How to not do it.

  10. I wish! No such luck but, its now when I think I could have done some work on the backand changed it to a removable apron. But, my compliance head said it would alter the chassis and given me all sorts of other issues to sort!

  11. Cant imagine VW didnt do it without a reason... other than making homefixers life a jenga based nightmare...
