Engine/Gearbox Swap Advice, Please

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ben Biscoe, Nov 23, 2020.

  1. I've a 1974 Bay with no transmission, and I've bought a 1977 donor vehicle with a 2l engine which I plan to remove, along with the gearbox and drive shafts, and fit in the early bus. Will the later engine and gearbox be a straightforward fit, or were modifications made at some point which might cause me problems? It's a twin Solex carb model and has been upgraded with an electric fuel pump. I've removed the engine already, but wanted to check before I remove gearbox etc. Thanks for any advice!

I have a 74 bus with a later box and engine. It fits though it's a squeeze as the later box is 10mm or so longer and VW changed things a little underneath si you might fing you have to adjust an I beam to avoid this clash.

Check on the exact date of maanufacture of the bus .. as this is the crossover period. So for instance the rear suspension and body shell of my 13th October 1973 built bus is a 1974 style while the steering column is a pre 1973.. BUT it was registered in April 1975 as it spent the oil crisis with Devon.

It may already be modified for fitting the T4 engine.
You at least have a set of dimensions to compare off the donor..
