Engine cutting out when I am stopping

  1. Hello,

Well it didn't take long since KDM came back from her MOT the questions begin! Sorry

I've just driven her to fuel up for tomorrow and every junction I stopped at the engine stopped.

I am wondering if the fuel mixture has been changed to help get it through the emission levels; does this seem feasible or is there another reason? Any help is most welcome :)

ring and ask the garage? is it ticking over at all when not coming up to stop (parked) it could be blocked filter restricting fuel?

  3. If it stops every time you take your foot off the throttle, check that the lead hasn't come off the fuel cutoff valve on the side of the carb. This, or a duff valve, with cause the engine to shut off on idle (which is its purpose in life).

  4. If youve let it run low on fuel then you may have bloked filter as rick says or more likely got a bit of crap in one of the jets, whip them out large and small ones ie screws on side of carb if solex or similar and if youve got a can of lighter fuel give it a blast through, then put them back check rubber sealing ring is on their too , turn in till just touches bottom not tight then out 2n a quarter turns rough . See how that goes, if they have been playing with the carb you will need to run through carb set up as per what ever carb you have.Theirs some threads on here somewhere. Good luck dont panic its vws. Also check idle screw on choke cam is set right.

  5. I had this problem yesterday with a customer's van. I spent a while checking other stuff while suspecting a carb issue but thinking it couldn't be that because it was a newish carb and the van had an inline filter. When i took the carb off, i found it was a sort of coating on the inside of the float chamber which had flaked off and blocked the pilot jet. That provides fuel when idling, so it would run when driving, but stall at roundabouts etc instead of ticking over.

  6. Gents you are wonderful right job sorted for this afternoon. Will talk with the garage and ask them a few questions about if they have done anything.

Many thanks for the kind words and suggestions. I'm on it - will let you know how I go :)

Thanks again +k on it's way!

Apart from the shutoff valve power connection from the live side of the coil falling off or been left off or connected to the points...

The other reasons I can add are -

rust and crud from decaying fuel hoses. Builds up in float chamber also fuel pump filter. Block things.

    Also throttle spindle air leak
Inlet manifold not properly torqued onto cylinder head.
Throttle cable now has some slack in it because the pedal now has a spring and the throttle cable isnt down to three strands

These last three have been true at some time for me. The crud didnt stop the engine but it told me it was new hose time.

Whats the tick-over speed like you could try turning it up a bit and see if that helps

I've just started experiencing this exact problem, please let us know your outcome, thanks.

Or if you have T4 engine with servo check the vacuum takeoff elbows on the inlet manifolds.

Most likely they adjusted the carb for the emissions though.
