So i am taking the engine out to sort a fuel leak and plan on giving the engine bay a quick spruce up. My van is not a show van, its for camping so not really into having it all shiny just to cover up a few bits of surface rust and to be better than the black sticky stuff that's there. So what should i use and any tips
Dont use hammerite dude it chips really easily and isnt the best of paints Wilkinsons do there own brand aerosol enamels for avout £5 for a decent sized can and its good stuff for the money Id go for white as it hides more faults and will help you too see in the engine bay better when doing maintinance Dont forget to etch prime any bare metal areas dude
Go get a tin of rustoluem mate cheap and when it's thinned down it can easily be rolled on I did mine this way it just take longer to dry than most paints
I've started mine using a POR15 base which has been a nightmare and needed about 12hours of flatting before using a bit of etch to cover uncovered metal... I'm only half way through, but this is to be followed with high build primer, proper paint, colour flatting and polish... not a show bus, but a useful inconspicuous area to practice painting!! I brushed the POR15 and it settled a bit, pooled in places and so on. I guess the same may happen with Rustoleum, even rolled, so I suppose it depends on the finish you're looking for
All I did Was sand the bay down and paint over any bare metal with etch primer then use rustoluem . 1 coat of that then flatted back areas with runs or muck in the paint etc and gave it another coat . Plus most of that was done with a brush and it was strait out of the tin
Treat the metal like you would for a sill or door with suitable primers and make it shine and don't paint it black. Engine bays never look good black.
I love epoxy mastic .......but the engine bay will look nicer in body colour - either celly, 2K, rustoleum etc
Must say I've painted my front beam with 2k black strait out the tin with no hardener and it worked a treat not very smooth compared to the rustoluem
