Hi, I've ended up with an engine access hatch (well the hole) in my quest to get a small deck cut, that I don't need. I'm planning to cut this up so I can get a couple I fuel sender hatches out of it and the engine hatch separately.

I would be interested to know how much material is required around the engine hatch in order for it to be welded into another van?

This photo shows what I cut out last night. There's probably an inch or so of the profiled deck clear of the support bars that go from side to side and I wonder if this is enough? I presume that the 1600 vans don't have support bars from one side to the other

I've just fitted an inspection hatch in mine, i put the joint in the middle the the support bars if that makes sense,
I thought doing it that way there would be no welds to see from underneath
So i would think about inch beyond the support bars would be perfectly adequate for someone to use, all the support bars were in the same place on mine

this is what i ended up using from my body cut

and this is the hole i cut in the van

i had to go a bit bigger in places due to some rot in my floor

    and tacked in
