Yes, but they need changing more often than cycle gears going up a hill

My dad’s replacement hips lasted 21 years, they just about outlived him. I’m about 20 years younger than he lasted so I reckon anytime soon I should get new ones. Can’t see myself needing them any longer than that!

  4. Cycling after a hip replacement is fine. At the age of 52 I had one almost five years ago, last year I went on a French Alps classic cols holiday did 6 major Tour de France Alpine climbs, it wasn't my hips that were the problem. My other hip was due to be done 3 to 5 years after the first but so far apart from the occasional twinge it has been OK. Good luck and dont think that life ends after a hip hop.

I blame the likes of Strava for the obsession on how many miles have you ridden, I see my mates driven by mileage and not necessarily how much fun they have had.

Cyclists are much like the people who congregate in the present crisis, only obeying the rules that suit them, that's mainly why they are disliked.

  6. ha ha most cyclists are motorists

I’m not one of those Strava types, trust me!
Hips aren’t too bothered by cycling, but walking on the other hand isn’t great, especially when it’s cold.

  8. E-bikes are a bit like 29ers, some people love em, some people hate em. Good arguments for both sides, the fact that you can get further exploring and probably enjoy more down sections in a day I like the sound of that but also agree it feels a bit like cheating. For those with a love of MTB who didn’t see this, Steve Peat released ‘won’t back down’ to keep people inside & entertained during lockdown. It’s a great documentary and he’s a top bloke too

Yep. There are idiots on both sides, and I’m sure I can be one in either at times. I get hacked off stuck behind a bike crawling up Ditchling Beacon when I’m in the car as there’s nowhere to overtake, and being stuck behind a group two or three abreast.
That’s an odd one as when I rode on the road we’d always ride single file when cars came up behind.

I just avoid riding on the road wherever possible these days, although lockdown is a perfect time to get out on some of the lanes as cars are so rare at present.

  10. Electric bikes.......

The fact is I'll probably get one at some point but the longer I can get out under my own steam the better.
The Yorkshire Dales are a little lumpy and so I can see the advantage but I like to think I don't need one yet.

Think of it the other way, there isn't anything better than catching someone only to find they're on an ebike. Pure pleasure as you nod and say hi before leaving them behind.

I would have done the same, ride past, making a sarky comment to try to lighten his mood. Smug look emoji

  11. I purchased one generally for commuting after my previous bike was damaged in a fire.
During the lockdown & being furloughed i have been out on it nearly every day & I must say it is one of the best things I have bought.
The motor has 4 stages of assistance and only assists up to around 15mph. I generally only use the first two stages on hills and don’t use any assistance on the flat. The effort you put in is up to the rider, but I prefer to work at it and considering the ebike weight is nearly twice of a standard bike you can soon work up a sweat.
Some riders may want to put less effort in & rely on the battery more.
Whatever other riders may think ebikes are going to become more popular. The issue is policing the illegal ones which can reach 30mph + under battery power. Grey area as they should really be classed as a motorcycle, registered & insured.

I bought a second hand e mountain bike last November and rode it all through the winter. I don’t ride on roads - only trails, woods etc.

It’s flipping awesome. My normal rides were 13 or 14 miles a couple of times a week.

Now I’m doing 25 -30 miles. If you find a really good bit you can go back and do it again
I can even get up some steep inclines which I used to have to push up.

The assistance is adjustable from just taking the weight of the bike to max beans.

I recently sold my old human powered mountain bike when I realised I wasn’t going to ride it again. I enjoy the e mountain bike too much.

Sadly haven’t ridden too much during lock down but looking forward to getting back into it.

I’d recommend one to anyone. You won’t regret it

My son has just bought a E scooter from Lidl’s.
It’s pretty good. He uses it to get around on. It does around 11 miles on a charge, and can go 15mph! It’s great, as there’s not much traffic about.

  14. On a cycling holiday in France I met a Canadian couple in their seventies who were on a heavily laden tandem recumbent. They had started in Sweden and were on their way to Madrid - we met in Castres and they were heading into the Pyrenees. I was doing my best to avoid mountains so was massively impressed until they pointed out their bike had this little motor . . . to be honest I was still massively impressed.

  15. That is a great film, gonna have to watch it again.

I’ll never forget a time watching Rob Warner and Jason McRoy larking about at my local BMX track

I don't have a problem with ebikes and that people own them except for when you're out mountain biking in a group and the ones on the ebikes remind you that they have ebikes CONSTANTLY. And especially at every bloody hill.

Half of the gang I used to bike with have ebikes and sadly it's split the group and we don't all meet up as much
