Hi there was wondering what people use instead of the concertinaed plastic ducting between the heat exchanger and the body of your bus as mine are pretty much shot ? its a type 1 engine . thanks
Check out this thread mate it suggest using silicon hose, a few of us bought it off fleabay and it was very cheap for the quality. I've not used mine yet as my concertinas are ok at the mo. http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=9249.msg147848#msg147848

The concertina ones are a right pain to fit as they are quite stiff - if the weather is warm they are easier. I found I had to lie under the bus and use both hands to get enough pressure to shorten the concertina and get it onto the heat exchangers and then pull it onto the heater tube. There are metal cuffs inside the ends of the tubes and these tend to catch as you put the tubes on and then the tube will not go on at all as the cuff gets pulled out of shape with all the heaving. There seems to be some knack to it because when I took the engine out twice in three days the second time of refitting the heater tubes was a lot easier. It was the first upgrade I did to the bus back in 2010 and they were still passing hot air this evening on the M27.
One end has a plastic collar inside, one a more heat resistant looking collar. You can guess which way to fit them. They are poor but will fit with a struggle. I fitted mine as I refitted the engine which was much easier when you have an inch extra to squeeze them in. I think they're going to prove to be pretty carp.
thanks for the replies , i knew they did replacement pipes but just wondered if there was anything better or as good as i have had a few issues in the past with parts being a total waste of money due to being really poor fit or crap material . Thanks will have a think on the options ive seen
Fitting was quite easy but I had to take off the flap valves. Mine is a t4 engine though. A t1 is probably harder as the control is built in to the heat exchanger I think.
I thought the collars were a separate part, the concertina pipes are quite loose without them, these are what I have, and they make putting the pipes on more difficult, I found it best to slide these on the the heat exchangers and the Y piece first, fit the pipes and then slide these down snug into the concertina pipes. http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Gasket-heater-pipe-4-reqd-62-111819945_act_shop.product_pID_37712_lang_EN_country_GB.htm?crumbStartPage=6&crumbStartRow=76
