Driving without an exhaust...

  1. Yes, I know it will be mega loud, but will I do my injun any harm covering about 1 mile with no exhaust, nothing nada?

Head studs have finally given up the ghost, i've managed to get most of them out to replace with some nice new ones, but I managed to snap one and knacker the threads on 2 others and they just won't budge. If I can get it to my mechanic I'll see if he can weld some studs on the end for me, but I have to get it there... I really don't want to drop the engine if I can avoid it, as it has to come out in a few weeks anyway.

I could get it towed but its gonna be easier to drive so long as I won't do any harm to my heads/pushrods/engine.

Will be good to hear the sound like a Lancaster Squadron
    :)

  2. 1 mile? yes, i would do one mile without an exhaust, it will run rough, avoid sudden deacceleration as to not cause too much backfire.

  3. Id be slightly worried about those blue blowtorches setting fire to something under the van, tbh...

  4. Replacing head studs! While rebuilding my motor I'd had a couple that needed replacing. I trying everything, and nothing working, I took the head to a machine shop, and was willing to pay them to fix it. The guy "that is best at it" was put to the job. When i picked the head up I asked his secrets. I thought heat, cooling heat cooling in the right places etc. But no, he says best way with "these heads", is to get hold of what is left of the stud, " wiggle it" back and forth until it starts to move, you can hear a slight crack as it lets go, then slowly turning it out. The one stud that was broken off level he welded a nut on and did the same, griped it with Visegrips and wiggled it until the "crack" and then slowly turned out. May want to try it! Thought I'd pass it on.

  7. if youbarent gpoing far put the exchangers/silencer back on with whatever is left. Alos once run they will come out easier. had hours of fun with exhaust studs on mine overthe years!

  8. I have only 3 studs left on, and £500 of exhaust

    Think I'll tow it
    :)

  9. I see its not heat exchangers and silencer then its summat posh!

  10. J tubes and silencer. I'm hoping to fit the heat exchangers, if they were on it would £600 of zorst
    :)

  11. the reason my bus is called Sopwith ( as in Camel ) is due to the original sound of the motor due to a similar problem. Ran like that for some time but I didnt know any beter!

  12. Tow it dude you dont want a pull by the plod for an unsafe vehicle

  13. yes, im going to get towed. Stuff plod, I don't want any damage
    :)

  14. With studs that go through vast temerature changes i always soak them in plus gas and tighten them a little to get them to crack before trying to undo

On old tight threads its always good to use penetrating spray whilst rocking the nut or bolt ever so slightly back and forth

Your aim is to turn the corrosion into a light grinding paste

Even following my own adice ive sheard loads in my time so theres almost an element of luck to it dude

I always start on stubborn ones with a ring spanner first as you can feel through the spanner to a degree whats happening on the thread
