Just putting my passenger door back together and can't remember the order. I think I need to start with the window scrapers but which goes in first, outer or inner? Tricky little beggars and don't want to get it wrong and have to redo it.
Outer first if i remember correct and awkward inner one last .I did not use new inners as rubber was too soft and then turned on themselves when you wind the window up .
Couldn't find that. There's a pointer to one on Ratwell that didn't say the order though. I've reassembled the opening quarter light. Outer scraper has to go in before the quarter light but does the inner scraper go in before or after the quarter light? Presumably the window reg goes in with the quarter light? Should I drop the main glass in before the seals?
I can remember with the window regulator that poking it up the wrong side of the quarter light vertical pillar so it is on the inside of the door is a possibilty...and a possibility which is called learning.
Ah but you've omitted the senility factor! Remember I've already done the driver's side about three years ago
As I recall, it's outers, then inners, but check fitting the quarterlight. The winder mech has to go behind the vertical bit of the quarterlight. Something like that. The ends of the inners and outers should fit nicely round the q'light frame.
If i remember correctly the window runner that clips in and held by a 6mm bolt is also quite awkward. The job to be honest is a bit of a pain to do . The inner scraper i think i used long nose pliers to clip them in . Start it early one morning with a view it's done when it's done and try not to rush .
One thing to note is the outer scraper/chrome trim came with only 5 out of 8 lower edge clips, so I cleaned up 3 of the old ones. On the side of this strip there are no holes for the felt clips, so I drilled them. I'm also reusing the original spring clip for the inner scraper as the new one is very different. Got to do all the sound proofing first, once the paint has dried.
I did a Beetle door earlier in the year, I don't think Bay doors are much different. I tried reuse as many original parts as possible, modern replacements are generally poor. Also as Mike said, put the quarter light in before the regulator, it does fit together the other way, but the glass won't go in! Guess how l know
The regulator has to be in before the 1/4 light on a bay and the main glass too, sitting loose in the bottom.
That's useful to confirm, perhaps it was the other way on the Beetle? I am not sure now.... I do remember it was possible for the door to be completely together but the glass not to go in because the regulator was on the wrong side of the quarter light.
Inner scraper before 1/4 light I believe. The rubber end of the scraper tucks behind the 1/4 light which I don't think you can do if the 1/4 light is already in.
When you've got a way of assembly sorted out ..could you write it up on here, as I've got to do mine again sometime this winter...ta.
