Does this look right?

  1. I have offered up the A pillar extension piece and it just don't seem right.

Anyone have any advice what I need to do?

Should I box in the A pillar first before fitting the extension piece?

    This don't look right!

Can I just weld it here or does it need the pillar front boxing in first?

I take it I can just weld it to the horizontal return so it extends out of the end of the sill?

    Any advice?

That doesn't look right at all.
You sure it's not a piece for the bottom?

  3. Got it from schofields and sent the piccy to Rick today and he confirmed thats right but I ain't having any of it! Looks like it needs something else don't it?
I know the A pillar repair is right due to the fit around the step end.

    Anyone?

  4. you will need to weld a closing panel onto the A pillar first.

I wrote a 'how to' on making an A post repair which should show you how the A post should look

    http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=2697.0

the inner valance infill piece should then butt up against the closing panel (I plug welded to the A post through the lip of the infill bit) ........there should be some pics on my resto thread of the infill bits welded in after the A post repairs

I'll try and find which page its on and post the link here

  5. just had another look and I've just realised yours is an early inner valance and mine was a late so they are different

heres the bit I thought it was

the early valances are pretty rubbish IMHO thats why I modified a late panel. I found the front panel didnt meet the inner valance at all due to the profile not being right leaving a big gap between the 2.

I also found there was a big gap between the back of the early valance and the A posts which I started making a filler piece for...............then gave up and used the late panel - it looks like you may have the same problem at the end of your inner valance?

for that top bit though, you definatly need to weld the closing panel onto the A post first

hope that has helped a bit

Ahh well done Diddy. Chunk of A-post missing. :)

  7. Diddymen, to are da man!!!

    Reps to you chap.
    Thanks

Is the late inner an easy modification for an early bus then?

  8. ta for the K+ :)

I found the later panel (genuine VW) much better quality than the repro inners TBH ....but a lot more expensive :(

It wasnt a problem at all to fit to my 72/73 cross over but it does depend on how 'early' yours is and wheather your front chassis legs are like early bays.........your chassis legs do look very similar to mine though (zed could probably point out the differences better than I could)

to fit to mine and have low indicators it was a case of clamping it in place (its quite a nice fit but may need a G clamp to pull it fully onto the ends of the chassis rails), welding to the chassis rails/dog legs, make up the filler bits like the originals had (like the ones in the pic in my last post). Once I had fitted my front clip I cut off the top return lip that a late deformation panel would weld to (kept this lip on to line up the front clip first) then with the lip removed fit the lower early/cross over front panel and cut out the indicator holes :)

I photographed every thing I did and I think the pics start on page 16/17 of my resto if its any help :)

  9. Cheers dude, I'll use it as a reference when I get around to the front. I'm redoing the chassis y-section just now!
    Thanks
