Just a general enquiry, does anyone on here own FYH 527L. It's a Westy and looks like a darker colour ( blue/ green/red etc) bottom half with white top. I've found a black and white photo in a magazine showing the above in the Sheffield Lords Mayor's parade in 1974. It looks like it was part of Gilders (local VW dealer) display.
@Meltman , Mrs Monkey's Marge came from Gilders at Banner Cross, Ecclesall Rd South back in 1976. The building is offices now, solicitors or accountants or both Pic taken 2007 And the dealer sticker. It suffered a bit when we exported her to Spain, but it's bizarrely recovered a bit. She's currently tucked up waiting for summer...and she got her original reg back
That's great @theBusmonkey. Gilders showroom was on Cambridge Street in the city centre and the workshop was on John Street I remember visiting both of them. They then had the purpose built building constructed at Banner Cross and transferred both town cities to there. I also visited Banner Cross site
They had a pretty cool history with VW. Formed in 1938 they were the first VW dealership in the UK in 1953. We are quite proud of that association and Marge lived firstly near the Botanical gardens for a couple of years then on Athol Road in Woodseats for pretty much 21 years before we got her and moved her to Hunters Bar! Mel is now her longest owner!
I met Jack Gilder a couple of times when I was a young lad. My sister and brother in law (both quite a bit older than me) had a series of beetles and then a type 3 notchback from Gilders. We were in the Sheffield club and used to take part (and win) in treasure hunts. The prize giving was at the Christmas party and Mr. Gilder often attended
Brilliant. Bottom of our road when we lived there. Just up Guest road 4 or 5 up on the left. The Lescar was our local. It's changed a bit in there now but we always have a wander round Sharrow Vale when we go back, which is quite often actually. Mel has been using the same hairdresser on Eccy Road for the last 20 odd years.
