Does anyone know whats going on with this engine?!

  1. I'll get the bit patched up then!

Umm where the rotor is pointing is where I've set my no 1 lead and they sit in this order

    3
    2 4
    1

if you were looking down on the dizzy that is! Is that the correct order?

I have thought about that but I also tried my brothers dizzy cap from his beetle at one point and it made no difference! And the thing when it started was before it had this problem.. that was last weeks problem.. thats how much trouble this engine is causing me at the mo! haha

    Thanks for the advice!

  2. No... it's 1 4 3 2 order. This could explain your problem

  3. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

  5. Yes, swap the 2 and 4 leads over and it should be ok.

As per Zed, you need to set the timing properly, I would suggest getting it running first then just twist the dizzy on its shaft left and right until it runs the best (mind fingers in the fanbelt  !) You will then need to get it set up right with a strobe. I would find a friendly VW garage or someone off here with a light who can give you a hand. (The bulb method is fine to static time your bus but to keep it going I would time your 009 dizzy at max revs with a strobe)

    Let us know the outcome.

    Cheers

PS. lots of tutorials on timing - do a search in here or try JK site forum search. A book telling you how is John Muir How to keep your VW alive. (Generally a good book)

  6. Just seen you have electronic ignition so you probablt can't use a bulb method for timing. Definitely get it running then set up with a strobe.

  8. Good advice above, I didn't know about the bulb with elec ignition. Thank you will save carrying round a strobe in toolkit!

  9. NB//...you can't just swap plug leads round like you could on old A series and other motors...if i remember correctly, the dizzy drive has to be dropped in in the right place so that the dizzy shaft mates with the slot...this dictates the position of the cams on the shaft...the cams are not even to account for no.3 cylinder running hotter than the others...how's that for a random [glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow] ;D

God knows where I read that...
