The easiest answer to stop the proliferation of bullMarmite is to charge more for sending it and storing it.

As communications links become cheaper and storage seemingly infinite - the septic tank of rubbish will only ever expand.

Diminishing attention spans are probably going to be the saviour of the day - as no one will have the inclination or care to sift through it - and people care more about relevance and proximity to themselves.

The raw information exists and there is no motive to make it smaller, more truthful or control it in anyway - if some people are stupid enough to take it at face value there is nothing new in that - and it separates those that care from those that don't (ask yourself this, how long do you think this stuff stays in peoples minds?)

I don't think that the care/not care ratio is necessarily an indication of intelligence - put it this way - if you read on the internet that you can catch a bullet in your teeth and then went and tried it without any further research - that's nature sifting your genes out!

  2. It will never change. Its endemic. The Green movement has built its reputation around it. As have many organisations because at the heart of it lies a simple truth. Most people, myself included, are morons. We cannot be arsed to sift through information when someone gives us something emotive to moan about and get outraged about. Thats why news corporations are big industries because they only tell us the bits we want to hear for our entertainment. Who cares about news thats boring. No-one. They treat us like idiots because frankly, we are.

If we wanted change we could do it tomorrow but we don't, so it won't either. We are both the cause and the cure.

  10. The post was a post about disinformation whereby some agencies use absolutes and half truths to further their cause. Combined with peoples inability to check facts themselves and accepting things as facts when they are not. It also went on to say things about why do this when most people are already sympathetic to the cause anyway.

The Greens are the perfect example of this. I am sympathetic to their cause yet the peev me by doing all the above. For me it belittles their cause and casts doubt about the issues. The issue is plain to see. We dont need these half truths. It muddys the waters and gives the critics opportunities.

Anyone can find an absolute or an extreme example or even a one off. Whilst these are fine for ADDING to the information to justify an issue they should not alone be the justification. Everyone knows freak occurences happens now and again otherwise the 'Marmite happens' phrase wouldnt be so profound in the English language.

  11. My friend (same one I mentioned in the TV licence one) is someone who reads something - joins the cause but dosen;t research the facts.

The sent us an email about Turtle egg farming in Costa Rica - saying - it's disgusting etc etc - and some campaign had written all this rubbish about what really went on.

Katie had actually spent 3 months working in the village and set the facts straight - our friend passed on this TRUE information to the people who started the campaign and they wrote back to him saying they would continue to spread the word - based on their half truths ....

The basic moral is - everyone lies ....

  12. The fundamental problem with all these half truths (and the main reason I hate Facebook) is that people believe the rubbish that is spouted at them and as such then pass on these half truths as gospel. It's about time people began to realise that they are being fed lies. The same as the news corporations feeding us story's but withholding the full story.

  13. Damn. I've missed all the action. Bookmarked BR's post for a quiet read, and now it's gone!
