Different pop tops

  1. Am I right in thinking that its westy, Danbury, Viking etc that have big beds up top and most others have bunks? What's the difference between a front hinged & rear hinged (if any!)

Those that have big beds up top, do you kip in them or are they for the kids?. My little ones are too small for bunks now but they could sleep in the r&r bed if me and the mrs could go up top.

Space is diminishing fast as the family gets bigger so I think I'm going to look into cutting the tin.

Sorry if these seem stupid questions but I've never actually been in a camper with a poptop.

Perhaps you need to go to spring camp and have a nose about. :)

surely the kids would now enjoy the "adventure" of an awning to themselves? i would rather that than cut a tintop.

  4. The eldest is only 2 and a half. I like the idea of keeping the tin but I have been away many times (north Wales especially) where it's too windy to put the awning up for some of the time. Also, I would quite like to be able to stand up too.

well i'm 6ft 4 and have a rear hinge westy i've slept up top and there's more room than down below as i have a 3/4 rock and roll below, the super viking is massive uptop and the devon moonraker is good too, not sure on danbury or the front hinge westy though.

  6. For a big bed up the top you want a superviking, viking, moonraker or late westy

Oconners campers do roof conversions based on the late westy with a double bed up top

  7. Cheers guys. The front hinged looks like it might be bunks.....

  8. i've got a rear hinged westy style roof i believe with a piece of wood that drags over... it creates a fulll width up there, i slept up there at springdub and had the best sleep ever :) LOVE IT!... but vikings give more room thats for sure...

  9. Front hinge westy roof only gives you minimal space for kids to sleep, we have a rear hinge roof and me and the wife have slept up there no problem, really comfy too, we have a cab bunk for oyr eldest daughter (4) and the baby will have the pop up cot.

For the bunk she stands on the westy stool/box thing to get i, we taught her to shout to us to get out to save on accidents!! So far so good, with the headrests in place and the sag of the bunk he hasn't rolled out.....yet!

  10. That's the same as I have, it's huge up there

  11. Do you have ladders to get up there or bunk it?

  12. Mines a late westy style pop top and we just stand on the cooker unit to climb up there

  13. We have the earlier front hinge westy roof and its great for my 8 yr old daughter, it's big enough for a couple of kids but I wouldn't go up there myself but that's mainly because I'm a big lump of a man!

Mrs Robo & I have the full width rock & roll bed, my 3 yr old starts out on his own make up bed but always ends up in with us at some point, at 4am all four of us were tucked up in the r n r it was very snug & couldn't roll over :)

  14. Rear hinged Westy. Double upstairs. Great when you want some space in all sorts of ways.

  15. We have a super viking - 3 of us sleep in the roof - I am 6'5 and have plenty of room - t'wfie and I in the rear double bed and t'daughter in the bed at the front - it still leaves plenty of room up stairs for books and stowage etc - the dogs get the 3/4 R&R bed

  16. I think front hinge Westy is a 5'6" long bed which works for smaller kids. my rear hinge one is over 7' long up there and old easily sleep two adults up top.

my eldest kid was 5'2" at nine years old when we got our bus so we knew we needed space which Is what decided us to get a late rear hinge one.

    Tuesday wildchild I'm a circle!

Leave the kids at your parents and enjoy your holidays more.
You'll save a fortune and be able to keep the tin top.
