Devon pop-top mechanism?

  1. Posted this here in 2010 and then everything disappeared - including my registration .

Anyway, I've been told this is a Devon pop-top but I'm not convinced and I've been unable to identify it anywhere.

It has a torsion bar elevation "system" which now works well, but probably failed early in its life.

Just curious as to the maker.

Well it devo is a Devon but I think its had some home made hold up bars fitted and its had one of them roofcaps fitted, it looks nice :)

  3. As much as i hate to disagree with woody, the devon pop top is made up of a steel frame with an aluminium skin on the the
outside and a vinal headliner on the inside, consertina bellows and a scissor type lifting mechanism. A roof repair skin would not change the appearence of the inside, it is just a cover that sticks straight over the top.
But your louver windows definately are devon.
Sorry woody, dont want to upset any one else.

  5. That isnt a jk roof cap thats an MnS Roof cap. :-

  6. Interesting that the windows are Devon, didn't Holdsworth also fit these? I doubt if Devon actually made them.

One bloke on the JK website responded (a couple of years ago now) saying that he had the same pop-top so it's definitely a factory made thing. Unfortunately, he didn't know who made it.

Interestingly, the way that mine was made would have never worked properly and must have led to failure of the torsion bar anchor points almost immediately. Whoever designed the thing hadn't thought it through properly.

I've made a few mods to mine (basically fibreglassed in some oak blocks with stainless sleeves and put stainless rollers on the ends of the arms) and it works fine, but the anchor points for the torsion bars are still a bit of a worry, if they fail again I'll probably fit gas struts instead.

The pvc "bellows" are a bodge-up by the previous owner, will be making a proper job of it soon.

  7. Wondered if anyone could tell me if this was a Devon poptop. It has rounded corners. Sorry it is so dirty. Cleaning it up![IMG]

  9. & just found out. The reason it looks different is because it has a "just kampers" lid stuck on top of it
