detachable rear crossmember/rear valance

  1. Upto '71, bays didn't have the gearbox cradle either, so i wouldn't think it would make the van unsafe to remove the valance, just less safe. VW did quite a bit of beefing up of the rear end from '72 onwards, and the front of course. It's more that removable valance conversions always look like they've been done with a tin opener.

I reckon i could get a t1 engine out in 15-20 mins if it wasn't for the nut behind the fan housing, that always adds 10 mins.

The remove able rear valance won't save any time, as you will have to take the rear bumper off and the valance, in that time you could have half the engine disconnected ;)

  12. Wow, I really have opened a can of worms here, I was only looking on saving £150 on buying inner and outer valance by making my own! Running a T4 lump so nice to know its easy to remove thanks for the input

Would be interesting to get a definitive answer on this but I guess its an interpretation thing.

  19. from the DVLA's site

you are not using the original unaltered chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshel to the same specification as the original.
