Ah... well that depends on circumstances! If it was just me in our tintop, then it would need no expansion. The only external activity would be putting the thermo whatsits on the front window and toilet duties. The latter of these could be facilitated by installing sliding windows or buying a porta potty. With Mrs and toddler in tow the awning is required, multiple in out assembly jobs for the bunk etc. I would like to train my travelling companions in the art of traveling light but I feel it would be easier to train a goldfish to make a bacon sandwich.
I think tintops lookmuch better than poptops but not v practical. So tintops tend to be cheaper... but if there was something that kept the look but increased camping versatility, then I think there would be a market for it. I’m unlikely to be buying another vw anytime soon but would certainly have looked at tintops if there had been a better camping solution. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No, we spent weeks on a pilgrimage searching them out, trying all the backwater towns and iffie supermarkets to no avail.
I’ve got a tin top @Dub and Dubber and agree with @Lazy Andy. It’s ok when just me but a bit of a pain when 2 of us without an awning. I’ve just got full width bed and miss having a hob for morning cuppa. I did buy a hob and cheapo unit to make myself but not got round to it yet!
@Merlin Cat I copied the Devon Caravette layout when I built my interior with the cooker relocated to a removable seat base. Works well, but that still means we need an awning when we’re all in!
I’m listening ... we have a similar dilemma - there’s me, the other half and an 11yr old daughter - we usually chuck the awning up for anything more than 1 night and I get the bus to myself - for one night we’ve had the cab bunk for my daughter but she’s outgrown this so we have to sort something else out , I’m currently considering using the a and b posts and bolting some support brackets to take width way mounted support bars which will take a canvas bunk mounted lengthways to give a little more leg room ... still only an idea in my head that I’m going to look at further over the winter ..
This sort of happened a few years ago at techenders - I couldn’t have shut the door properly and she kicked it open - complaining that she was cold and wet about 4 in the morning - eventually I listened and saw that she had snow on her feet
Take off rear hatch. Fit hinges ambulance style at bottom. A telescopic spiral staircase pulls down from the back of a sleeping box on the roof fitted like a full length roofrack . The flap at the end of the box becomes the roof when its open with a fabric tube that protects the staircase. Then somebody leaves the handbrake off on top of the cliffs above Hartland Point.
