Argentina lost 60 aircraft the last time they invaded the Falklands. Since then they've not replaced a single one because they're skint. To quote one South American reporter " they couldn't even invade Paraguay" :

I went down there to recover a Tornado in September 2000, and had a great time down there. I have to say it felt like I was still in the UK with a few querky differences (and all the locals having the same hair cut) but it is a very British place all the same. A little sad to think I'll not get back there!

I think the U.S. would argue that South America is in their own backyard and need "guidance" particularly if they elect the "wrong" individuals to government.

They tried that in Vietnam & look where that got them

A lot of dead, a lot of wounded but hell the Vietnamese now drink Coke and provide cheap labour for the coffee plantations run on behalf of several well known US brand names. Just don't mention the word Communist )

I went down there to recover a Tornado in September 2000, and had a great time down there. Great South American tradition...its called distraction politics. Trouble at home....get the populace wound up about some external threat or insult to the national dignity, real or perceived. The crowds that have been demonstrating outside the Presidential palace over economic ills, corruption and suchlike then become fervent patriots cheering the leader instead of wanting them thrown out of office. )

With the added dimension of the US, who yet again, demonstrate that they should keep their noses out of other people's business.

I think the US government have a pretty poor record generally for giving "guidance" to other countries and in fact have been responsible for rather a lot of "wrong" individuals in government.

Whenever they get involved in international politics, it isn't because they want to be fatherly and benevolent to other nations. Their first principle of international affairs is "America First".

Quite agree. I do believe if the situation arose they would dump on us without a second thought. However it does raise the thought that if viable oil deposits were found within Falkland waters and Argentina ramped things up to a possibility of military action would America step in to help," special relationship" and all that, at a price of course or do a deal with the Buenos Aires government denouncing it as a colonial relic and forcing the UK to hand over the territory to joint Trust status with America being a neutral "partner".

Pie mate, don't take this the wrong way but speaking to some of the old boys they didn't even know where the Falklands were let alone the history behind it.
