Deafening break noise...

  1. Help! I've got a horrible, deafening squealing/screeching noise coming from the front brakes - it happens once the brakes have warmed up bit and then is every time the brakes are applied. A real head turning noise. It's been back to the garage 3 times now and they have replaced the front brake pads, discs, calipers and hoses (all from Heritage). But it's apparently still not fixed, so they are stripping everything back again tomorrow and starting again (which I'm not expecting to be charged for!). Getting a bit fed up now. Any bright ideas anyone?

Did you run the pads in by braking gently for a few days/weeks?

  3. Mine have been like that for ages! It will go apparently......

I find mine is when brakes are warm and have been used a few times in quick succession. I just turn the music up.

did they put some copper grease on the rear of the pads? this stops the resonating and the squealing.

  5. Vw used to fit an anti squeal shim between pad and piston on t1 front discs. I don't know if they did this on t2. I ran my bug without and the noise was horrific. Pop em in and it's gone. They were a piece of steel the rusted quickly but were easily remade as they were so thin

  6. Yep Bays do require backing shims (and copper grease on the back of the pads and both sides of the shim. Cant see why they would scream so much!

  7. Fronts should have squeal shims, although Brazzy callipers don't. Still need the copper grease.

Whether this would stop loud squealing - don't know.

  8. I think I got my new squeal shims from heritage, just had a look and the kit no longer comes with the backing shims

  9. has to be oil/brake fluid contamination or the pads not adhering to the discs...Might need to "ruff up" the pads...

If they are switched on they would put the old pads on and take it for a spin....

  10. Thanks guys. Heard fom them today and no real progress apparently. They tell me they've fitted the shims already, as well as roughing up the pads. Still scratching their heads and say they are working on it. They say they've been told today of some pad glue which apparently will help. I'm a bit fed up to be honest. Aaargh!

I think JK sell an anti rattle kit which has a stronger spring plate clipped to the pins pushing the pads hard forwards . Fitting that and copper greasing has silenced mine.

And while fitting it I discovered that the nearside and offside calipers are slightly different and meant I needed to file a couple of mm off the side of one of the flat spring plates to stop it fouling the caliper.

The anti-squeal shims have 2 tabs on them (if they haven't been flattened).
The pistons have a section that contacts the pads cut out and must be fitted in the cylinder a certain way round.
Then the tabs locate to the pistons and stop the pistons gradually turning round.

So is it a fair assumption that if the pistons are allowed to turn the brakes will squeal?

I note that my offside pads which squealed have rings of bare metal lining up with the circular end of the piston. On the other side there was traces of copper grease and the paint hadnt yet.rubbed off in a circular pattern.
If I remember I lost the grease while fitting the offside pad then crushed the tube under something ...
