De-skinning heat exchangers!

  1. Hi guys
This mornings job is to fix leaking exhaust from just inside heat exchanger where the j tube exits the skin. Anybody dismantled a heat exchanger before as in de-skinning it?
Advice needed before I attempt operation as I don't have a spare laying around.

  2. Are you thinking of dismantling and then assembling?

  3. The rust bug de-skinned mine!

  4. Thanks for replys Gents. I was hoping to de-skin ,repair ,then re-skin with original skins.....if that makes any sense

  5. I've known folk who've done it - give it a go. Lever off where the outers are folded and unpeel them. Might have to grind off a few small welds. Can be done.

The internal exhaust pipes generally survive, as they're much thicker. Do tend to rot at the far ends where the clamps fit, tho'

  6. Cheers Snotty.

  7. Just for info, had a mate who did this...wanted to keep the genuine VW inside bits (with big fins), but the outers were rotten. He sacrificed the outer skins of two repro exchangers he had to give the old ones a new lease of life. Worked well - go for it!

  8. Might be handy when you prise them off the weld th skins back up....I did it once I needed the weld one of the ends at a different angle to make it a rhs one ,I had two lh ones for some reason.. ???

  9. I did it to mine used an angle grinder to take off lip, repaired dents holes etc then placed back and seam welded. Type4 exchangers being several times my income had no option!

  10. If you're doing it, don't bother to weld the skins the inner pipes. They'll expand at different rates and bend themselves.
