Dashboard New or Restore?

  1. I'm currently in the process of welding, filling and sanding my dash and dash top, but have seen new dashes and dash tops for quite reasonable prices. I know they still require some modifications to fit my year and RHD but what is the quality like?

  2. yeah i was thinking same thing as my dash is a bit of a mess tbh... :S not impressed...

Youre better off with a good second hand original one than a new one TBH. There have been several versions over the years with different vents on the top and different finishes on the bottom for instance.

  4. Redo your old one, if it's metal. Easy peasy.

You can reproduce the speckled texture with the aerosol paint used to give things a stone-like texture, then spray the lot with Halfords satin black. Mine came up a treat, looks like new.

Have some pics if I can find them.

  5. Mine looked a right mess after it'd been chopped and welded and played about with. Then it was covered in padded black vinyl - just like they did with the Westy dashes. It really sets it off a treat, making your dask look brand new (these people did it http://www.awesome.eu.com/VW%20Interiors.htm - scroll down till you get to the dash boards - you post 'em the dash and they send it back when finished). Have you thought about doing something like that?

    The choice is yours. 8)

  12. You've obviously made your mind up... 8)

A Brazilian dash (£68) and dash top (£60) would still need modding for a RHD...

It took me about two hours to spray mine with cans.

PS Aren't the Brazilian ones grey, not black?

I haven't made up my mind as such it's just I have seen a dash top (Genuine VW part!) selling at 39.95€ supplied with corner fresh air vent slots but without ´73 - on heater vent apertures, these require cutting out. If someone had bought these new parts and the quality was questionable then I would stay with the originals. But at that price it seems a lot quicker just a quick prep and paint. Hence the original question anyone know what the quality is like?
