My dash lights were not working at all when i got my van i presumed the bulbs had gone so when someone on here was selling replacement leds i bought some and they kind of worked , i mean they lit up my deluxe clock and dimly lit my speedo etc , but when i pull the switch from side to headlights the only one that works is the clock , it just turns the others off , anyone know why?. Any help will be gratefully received
Are the clocks lighting wires connected to the same circuit?? You could find its the switch. For something so simple VW made it quite complicated unlike the French. One switch does all. VW's has about 4 circuits. Also rotate it one way or another because it has a rheostat incorporated in it.
Deepens on how it's been wired and what the lights are. If you have LED's in you main dials but a bulb in your clock they will be different. There is a small wire terminal on the back of the switch that does the dash lights. Put a light tester on it to see if there is a break in the power. The switch is quite complicated inside for a simple 60's designed switch.
Just pondering. Next to the wire for the dash lights there is a permanently live terminal (check first with a light tester). Try plugging the wire to that to see if they work.
Light switch and circuit is easy now get your head round the hazard/indicator circuit One wire (small terminal on switch) should feed all dash backlights check that wire has 12v at each lamp holder with the dimmer turned full up. If not look for bad or corroded wire and where the bulb holder makes contact. Different led makes act to voltage differently a bad connection or corroded wire will drop the voltage and may stop the led working. I tend to like standard bulbs with clean contacts or use the strips of leds glued behind the dash
What have you wired your clock light to, PT? As I recall, all the dash lighting (terminal 58 in Bosch-speak) is supplied by a grey/red (from memory) wire behind the instruments, connected to a terminal on the headlight switch.
