Its the bit inside the grooves where the balls sit that pits thats worth a look.

  7. Clean them up with something that will help remove the old grease and show us again

Brake cleaner. Nasty stuff, I buy it by the case but it works!

  9. That's what I used too, when I did mine last summer

I probably ought to check the rubber hasn't perished

Looks a bit like they used Induction Heating as the blue is quite localised whereas conventional heating would radiate out more

Not exactly a smooth surface is it?
The slight dent is the beginning of wear... but there is no wear so I guess it's a bit soft. I'd stuff it back together and carry on.

By the way, cleaning your hands with solvents sends the chemicals two ways - into solution and into your skin. Use soaps.

  17. +1 I'd re-use that wiv a bit o' fresh grease.

  18. It'll be going back in, I'll measure against the vw one to compare as it looks a few mm wider but maybe not..

Put it back the right way though... isn't the raised centre bit supposed to be on the drive shaft side?

Should I be asking what grease to get loads of comments .. ..

It'll be the stuff in the sachet that came with the new boots I got, though the ones on there don't look too bad now theyre off and wiped, guess that was spare grease on the outside of them ..

    Should be as you say...
They're often wrong out of the box to no detriment to be honest but below is the 'correct' orientation.
They're also ideally 'clocked' on the axle. This is where the large curve on the outer race is opposite the small curve on the outer race of other joint at the opposite end of the axle. If that makes sense...but it's no Biggie I think if it's not done like that
    Correctly assembled joint...

With the other side all flat effectively..

Which then faces either the hub or the output flange

I didn't know that - makes sense. Got to my boots some time so I'll do this while I'm at it.
