Crossover front brake calipers

  1. Hi

After just looking @ the price to replace my front calipers on my 72 crossover £180 each??

I wanted to know if it is possible to replace the whole front units with late bay calipers? ie discs and pads

Has anybody done this? As it must save a few hundred quid

  2. what's wrong with the old ones?
    :)

  3. The capilers stick when hot, (on motorways) so I loss brakes all together and have to pump pedal to stop.

  4. Are your front flexis breaking up inside? Master cylinder got the necessary bit of free play in the operating rod? Both of these will cause your brakes to bind (as well as sticky pistons).

  5. You will have boiled your brake fluid by now hence the extra problems you're having.

Take the callipers off, remove the pistons, clean them up inside with fresh brake fluid, give the pistons a really good clean so they are spotless, remove any slight pitting with emery paper or a scotch pad but DON'T scratch the pistons. Remove the old seals, replace with new seals and dust covers, job done.

When you refit the pads (fit new as they are so cheap) make sure you refit with a new brake fitting kit. Smear the back of the pads with copper grease DON'T get any of this on the brake surfaces...

Whilst you're at it why not go the whole hog and fit new flexi hoses too, adjust the rear brakes, fit new rear shoes if required?

You have to flush the system of all of that old brake fluid, every last drop.

You can do all of the above dirt cheap without having to break the bank. Fitting new callipers will only solve one part of your problem - you'll still have to do all of the above anyway.

    :)

  6. I got new discs , pads , brake hoses ,pad clips in a bundle package from cool air and was a good price take a look

  7. Cheers for all the advice everybody.

I'll let you know how I get on

  8. I ended up rebuilding mine a few years ago with a rebuild kit from gsf. Worked fine after.

I've still got an old set of 72 crossover callipers in the garage attached to a set of spindles and torsion arms. From when I replaced my beam from just so happens another crossover. Now. Havnt got a van going to get shot of all the old stuff.

  9. if you want to fit the later calipers you need to replace the stub axles for the later ones

  10.
  11. Will find sone photos out of it later when I got home. They looked quite rusty/ dirty on the out side but still worked ok, it's just the ones on the looked like new.
