cross-overs

  1. im a proud owner of a 72 crossover and this got me wondering these were a one year only model so there can t be that many about, so if you own a crossover lets see em, so we can see just how many are still going strong

  2. Yea they were a 72 year only model.

And there are shed loads of them out there. I beleve that 72 was the year that they made the most vehicles.

    Someone will correct me.

I got one too. There are lots of subtle differences to them.

  3. Yep i got one, best of both worlds, early and late. Alive and kicking, RHD aswell.

Here is our cross over...according to the Birth certificate from VW she was built at the beginning of March 72

    Mark :)

  11. Joycee was built in oct '72. She has some early attributes but mostly late.We think of her as a late crossover?

I had someone telling me that she had the wrong front on her the other week.
They said she must have had high indicator panel put on because they are easier to get hold off.
Cheeky no-it -alls, the front is about the only bit that is original. :)

  13. Its true there were more 72s made than any other year but a large number were commercials which by nature of their use tend not to last as long as camper or microbus versions, infact there were more microbus versions made in 70 and 71 than in 72.
Also crossovers really took 3 model years to evolve starting with the 71 with the discs , narrow 5 wheels and flared rear arches then the 72 with the restyled rear end, repositioned fuel flap and flared front arches and the 73 which was basically a 72 with the deformation panel, new bumpers and raised indicators. ( im sure ive missed one or two details.)
The 68 in my opinion was the true one year crossover with all its splitiness and new front end etc.
All this reminds me. Must get out more :-[

    My wifes crosser. ^-^

  14. I think the 72 is the best model year as you get most of the late attributes with the nicerfront end
    :)

got to agree with joker, the more i see the lowlight front the more i like it, that said i still want a 68 just for my birth year.

After reading this thread it confirmed what I already wanted to know, I'm going for lowlights on mine, had the bumpers since I go the van, got a pair of indicators, the indicator blank panels are on their way, and now I just need an early grille and badge.

Mines a late late Dec 72, so has square fuel flap, high indicators, and early sliding door, soo It wont look too out place, only to the geeks who'll see a 73 'M' on the plate and think thats not quite right.

  18. Makes no odds what plate is on there. It won't look odd. Why has it got a post August 73 plate on though if it's a Dec 72 model?
    :)

Was a converted panel van, so would have been sitting around for a while before being converted, build date is December 72, so just inside the tax free cut off date.

Its the rear vents/lights that define it as a Late!
