    Anyone fitted the empi pully?
I can't work out if the keyway is in a slightly different position or if my original has a bit of wear.[IMG]

  2. Keyway should be at 9 o’clock with pulley at TDC. Sure you’ve got your old pulley at the right mark?

Is the tape your timing point? Sure it's not the little white mark on the other side and maybe your distributor or the plug leads are 180° out?

Are you comparing the timing mark on the old one with TDC on the new? ;)

Just found a timing mark that I've never noticed before.
    Cheers mate.[IMG]

  6. Your white one may be 7.5* BTDC.

Yes but there was 10 deg difference
But just noticed the mark I've always used as tdc is actually 10 degrees

That's because VW pulleys don't have a TDC mark, they have a timing mark that should be more like 7.5 degs.

I have a VW service manual book of engine data and there are pullies with 1,2 or 3 timing marks on them listed around 1972..

Some marks are 0 degrees some marks are 5 ATDC for the US some marks are 7.5 BTDC and some marks are 10 degrees BTDC .
It all made sense when the vehicle still had its original engine and you could look up the engine number for the pulley VW bolted on in the factory.

As @snotty says the only fact is that 0 degrees is exactly 90 degrees from the keyway.
Or use a pencil or bolt to find TDC and mark that.

As far as I am aware a dent at the front is TDC, the v's at the back should be 7.5 or 10 depending on the original standard set up, you should be able to get some idea by measuring your new one.

And those aluminium pulleys can also get rapidly worn by a slipping fan belt. Unlike steel.

I'm keeping hold of the steel one as a backup

  15. I'd give the steel one a lick of paint and stick it back on ;)

You can also do a superb job of knackering an aluminium pulley getting it off, as they tend to break rather than bend, or decide to wear the keyway and go sloppy. ..

I use one because I was fed up with wobbly bent stock pullies though. Over enthusiasm with a puller ..

At least with the aluminium one, tapping radially with a soft hammer and pulling it off with the other hand works with mine, a very second hand Bugpak one..
