Correct power cable for radio

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SeanOC, Mar 6, 2021.

  1. Hi

My radio cuts out when I turn the volume up and I was previously told that’s due to it drawing too much power and the cable is likely wrong

As it’s a retrofit radio and has power 24/7 I guess the cable was replaced with the radio.

    2 questions:
What spec wire should I be using for the power?

Where should it be wired back to as I assume that it’s supposed to go off with the ignition isn’t it?

    Thanks

  2. I have just a normal jvc one which does the same thing so I made the cable thicker and a larger fuse but after some investigation its a safety thing built into the radios and apparently you need an amp to make it louder

  3. I'd doubt it's the cable. 1mm2 should be fine for a boggo radio unit. As above, I'd think you're flogging it more than it's capable of, and the audio amp inside is protecting itself by shutting down.

Power should be on two cables, usually red and yellow. One goes to a permanent live, the other to a live switched with the ignition. I can't remember which is which.

  4. Yellow is perm +12v, you can wire the two together to use the radio with the ignition off, but you may see more drain on the battery and be faced with a permanently lit display when trying to kip at night.
Id suggest its protecting itself as any 4x50w unit Ive ever wired up can handle the standard wiring (look at the size of the wires in any ISO connector) - it would usually distort and fart the speakers at max volume but never switch off.

  5. Get some hearing aids....:p

  6. Yep. Pretty weedy wires on sn ISO connector, and they still work.

  7. Hmm

Any suggestions on a modern replacement with Bluetooth as a replacement in a Bay, presumably I’d should replace the speakers too?

  8. What have you got at the moment? No real reason why it shouldn’t work.

It probably doesnt like the speakers too. Could be the speakers are too low resistance and inefficient.

I bought three Sony MEX2900BT Bluetooth/CD/MP3 players for about £100 each in Halfords about 8 years back, one for each car in our household.
They are 4x22W stereos with a 10A fuse and runs off 1.5mm2 wire. Bass is provided by a Maplins 2x100W sub woofer amp. With a bit of sound insulation I cant quite hear the engine in the bus.
