Cooking on a solid fuel Rayburn

  1. Does any one else on here cook on a Rayburn? We have just installed a Rayburn No1 we bought from eBay for £26 It is keeping the house cosy warm and so far I have cooked a roast and casserole but just wondered if anyone has any tips?

  2. Hi,use the ovens mostly, or you lose too much heat. Just use the plates to heat stuff quickly then pop in the oven to carry on.
Get some none stick sheet to use on the plates and you can cook fat free fried eggs on top.

  3. Normal pans won't work properly as they are not actually flat. That's OK on a red hot electric ring or on gas, but the rayburn works at a lower temperature, so you need more contact area. AGA do fancy and expensive pans with ground flat bases, but you really just need to be careful what you buy. Thin, cheap pans are a no-no and take a straight edge with you when shopping!

Then you need to consider summer cooking. The kitchen will be unbearable for 3 or 4 months of the year with the Rayburn wound up for cooking, so you will need an alternative. We used a Panasonic combi microwave and an electric wok in the summer when we had a Rayburn.

Because the top of the Rayburn is hot, small food splashes tend to burn on and build up on the enamel over time. Use one of those stanley blade scrapers (the kind used for cleaning excess paint off window glass), then you can clean it without turning it off.

Not got one in this house.

  5. Thank you all for your good advice. We haven't used our electric cooker since we installed the rayburn last Friday and so far its been great. It is a very old model so we have no lid on the top plate. I shall have to go out and find a non stick sheet and new pans. The Rayburn is in what I am grandly calling the Parlour so we still have a normal electric oven in the kitchen. We are using a mixture of coal and wood and experimenting controlling the temperature by opening the flu and the air intake wheel.

I am loving my new life in the country
