Clutch wizards please

  1. Hello, I'm getting a lot of clutch slip. Going into third on a hill is becoming embarrassing and unfortunately there's one on the school run.
The clutch was only replaced a year or so ago, funnily enough after the same was happening then.

Is the cable the only adjustment I can make?
If it's not that what else can it be? A new oil seal was fitted with clutch.
It's worse on these damp mornings. Could condensation be relevant?
There's no clutch smell after these hill journeys.

    Thanks for any pointers.

  2. cable could be stretched ?

Try loosening the clutch cable on the wingnut a few turns, is there any free play in your clutch pedal ?

What davidoft said.. make sure you have a bit of free play at the pedal before you feel the clutch start to work.

Is there any trace of oil at the bellhousing to engine join?

There are two seals engine side , the big one on the engine and an o ring inside the nose of the flywheel. If the o ring goes this can smear oil over one side of the clutch plate.

Generally the big engine seal is messy but the oil just runs down and covers the underside rear of the bus without going on the clutch as the spinning flywheel face throws it away from the clutch .

There is also a seal on the gearbox input shaft, which if it leaks it can cover the other side of the clutch.

If there is an oil drip at the front of the engine, smell it and feel it between your fingers. If its sticky and smells of sulphur its gearbox oil.

However first check your clutch cable adjustment.

What did the clutch look like when it was changed last year, covered in oil or just worn out?

  7. Thank you all. Well I've loosened off the wing nut to make the cable looser than it should be just to check the lever isn't being pulled a bit all the time. Unfortunately that has made no difference when I took it for a spin up the hill.
There is engine oil at the bottom of the engine. Not a a huge amount though.
No smells of gearbox oil anywhere. A smear of oil on the rubber gaiters at the front of the gearbox on the shift rod but nothing much.
I'm sure I changed all seals when I took the engine to bits but it does seem it must be a leak.
I didn't see the old clutch. Unfortunately I gave that job to someone else as I didn't have time. He said it looked like a worn clutch and I don't remember him mentioning oil.

    So what next...?

As Shielsy mentioned earlier; Is the clutch cable in good condition ?

It could be frayed or sticking but sadly I think the next logical step is engine out to see what is going on with the clutch itself and the release mechanism.

  9. The cable seems fine, and anyway I've loosened it off so much that the return Spring on the lever has no trouble returning.
I think unfortunately you are right I am going to have to get the engine out and look what's going on and replace seals.

Trouble is its my daily driver and I'm in a busy patch! Any friendly dub types near St Albans who might come and help me with a mini techenders outside my house??!

  10. Now here’s a good find...hopefully!
I went to have another look at the clutch cable and lever and the return spring broke off in my hand.
New one on order. Fingers crossed that will sort it!

  12. Part arrived but now I’ve been struggling to get the remains of the old spring off. Any top tips?
It’s quite tricky to get in there with any tools.
    Thanks.

You have removed the operating arm, yes ?

    Should go straight on.

I would describe the smell of gear oil more as cat P@%!!

  15. I affraid the spring won't help your clutch slip its there to return the lever nothing else as said its oil on clutch plate or did they replace all the clutch or just the plate and the springs on the diaphragm are soft. or your fly wheel is badly damaged and needed skimming sorry but it will be engine out to find out. :(
