Clutch Saga Goes On

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by keithandtrudystype2, Sep 6, 2012.

  1. Had some issues earier this year with the clutch/gear selection and put the new cable and conduit in which seemed to solve the problem although the clutch is biting high up on the pedal. Went to move the van tonight, couldnt engage gear, switched off engine, engaged first, started engine then with the clutch pedal all the way down, the van moved forward.

Can anyone advise is that a clue that the clutch has finally given up the ghost (van just done 100,000 miles, suspect this was the orig clutch) also, if this is the case, what else would one replace when doing the clutch (ie release bearing etc). Note that the gears engage with no issues with the engine off which would eliminate the gearbox or linkages (I think).

    Thanks

When clutches wear they slip, so I'd guess not the clutch.

Possible problem with the clutch operating shaft/arms? Does it feel different?

  3. Hi Zed,

The only difference is the fact I cant engage gears with the engine running, Have done about 700 miles since doing the cable and conduit, felt really smooth until tonite! There is too much play now at the pedal, not had chance to look underneath.

If its the shaft or arms, whats the cure? I am thinking I need the engine out to have a look which will be another challenge as I have not done that before, having read some of the posts on here and haynes/bently, I am prepared to have a go.

Appreciate any clues as to what the issue may be, if I do take the engine out, I will replace the clutch and all bits I can anyway.

    Cheers

I wouldn't discount the cable without checking it. If it's ok, operate the arm on the gearbox by hand - you know how it should feel from doing the cable - a little play. If there's a lot then it would point to something inside, so engine out for a look.

  5. Cheers Zed,

I will plan this for weekend after next and report in, thanks for the advice..

So to get the engine out? its a 79 type 4 2.0L, I am thinking, up on the ramps should give enough clearance, I have a high lift jack, do I need an adaptor to support the engine to drop it down then back up again? I read on a previous thread that the gearbox no longer needs supporting at this year, is that correct?

    Cheers

Yes the gearbox is self supporting.
It'll balance approx where the gauze filter plate is underneath. A peice of wood would be kind.
Be warned it's quite heavy with the exhaust system on.
