clutch replacement

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Valveandy, Apr 2, 2018.

  1. Evening people, my clutch is slipping if I press the throttle too hard in 4th, the cable is adjusted correctly so it looks like it is finally time for me to drop the engine (standard 1600, oil bath air filter, single solex carb and dynamo). I'm about to buy an ATV lift as this seems the way to go. All advice appreciated as I'm rather nervous about the whole operation.
Are the GSF clutch kits OK ?

Most common mistake is not threading the throttle cable back through the fan housing on refit, it's not quite 4 bolts but straight forward enough.

  3. Wait till you get the engine out if you can before ordering one, some twonk might have fitted a smaller one.

  4. Just be methodical, maybe take photos of where wires connect.

Best to take the engine out first, so you know exactly what you need to replace.

If you need a hand, give me a shout as I'm not too far.

  5. I have a feeling it will be 200mm anyway but thats a sensible thought and as GSF are just up the road I'll wait

I second waiting till you take it out. My new engine turned out to have a 215mm clutch.. Apart from measuring it to check, another confirmation is that 215mm clutches have M7 bolts with 11mm heads instead of M8 bolts with 13mm heads holding the clutch assembly to the flywheel

Basically the same bolts that hold the rear brake drums on..

  8. you will need a clutch alignment tool

  9. I'll pop it on the shopping list:)

  10. Lightly grease the tool splines, pop it in the hole, fit clutch plate then the pressure plate & bolt up - it's surprisingly easy if you do it in the right order :)

  11. I intend to check breathers/fuel filler while the engine is out. What else should I be checking or replacing?

  12. I always manufactured my own alignment tool out of a piece of dowel wrapped in masking tape as required.

GSF don’t always hold stock so why don’t you preorder the various items (separate reservations) and then when you know which one you need go and collect & then pay. The items you don’t want will simply get cancelled if you don’t go and collect.
