Clutch release bearing...

  1. When I took the engine out of my bus to do some body work, I noticed that the bell housing was well coated in oil inside...

Today, I cleaned that cr*p out of the housing and noticed there was oil all over the clutch release bearing too...so that's chalked up for replacement...but...
    a) Is there an easy way of determining where that oil came from (i.e. gearbox side or engine side)?
    a) which one to buy? Cool Air have one for £17.50, but JK's is £40...from what I can see the clutch plate is OK.

    oh...and it's a 1974 1600

  2. If the oil stinks its gearbox oil
If it doesent and its most likely then it will be the crank seal

    Have you checked your endfloat?

  3. End float is good. The engine is about 400 miles old...when all the solvents have evaporated I'll see what the oil smells like!

  4. If it's gearbox oil, change the gearbox input shaft seal. No need to chuck the release bearing out, just give it a wipe over.

    paradox likes this.
  5. As Snotty says - it is , after all , a bearing ....

    :hattip:

  6. And a sealed one at that!

  7. Aaaahh yes - been a while ...
God bless a reliable engine .

    :hattip:

  8. Thanks for the input!
I *think* it's gearbox oil...but can't be sure. I think I'll change the input shaft seal while the engine is out...and I'll check the crank end too while I'm about it.
