Clutch question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Harryankle, Jul 19, 2016.

  1. I've recently had my bus serviced and my mechanic says my clutch may be on the way it as he can feel it slipping on hills
Now I've never had a clutch go so I'm not sure what to watch out for
I've noticed for a while now that first gear has a judder when cold but it seems to go away in use. I think someone once told me this could be an oil leak onto the clutch plates and when it wore off it wouldn't shudder until it got oily again
What are the sign of it going ?
What's a ball park figure to replace it?
    Thanks in advance
    Al

Certainly sounds like it wants doing ...possibly your flywheel end oil seal is leaking and contaminating the clutch with oil or even the gearbox oil seal too , or both .
Both seals are best being replaced if the clutch gets done whilst everything is easily accessible .
As for cost and time . A decent fitter with loads of aircooled knowledge could crack it in a morning possibly .
Others all day ...and there charges vary depending on the overheads on garage rent ,and whether your down saff or orp north .

  3. What Faust said. Is there oil leaking between engine and gearbox ?

  4. I'll have a look under tonight
I'm up North been quoted 380

  5. Go to a hill and stop and try and go up it in 2nd...

Your bus will ever move up it or the engine will run fast and the bus will struggle to move....

make sure they do the oil seal...

  7. Don't know if it has any bearing on the judder but the clutch return springs broken

  8. Yes there is a little

  9. It could well be the oil seal is knackered, seeping onto the clutch causing it to slip / judder. Oil seal is £10 ish. Get a decent one Elring is good brand. If they are not overly aircooled knowledgeable make sure they oil it where it goes over the crank when inserting !! Clutch will still need replacing though as oil will have knackered it

  10. Ok it sets off in second
    First time a judder
    Second onwards seemed OK
I'm reluctant to spend 400 if it's not the clutch but we are driving to devon on a few weeks

  11. I'd risk it ,tbh long journeys will burn the oil off your clutch plate...

  12. I've noticed it on the last few trips being fine for hundreds of miles
Parking up outside the house for 20 mins then juddering in 1st when I drive it up hill onto the drive

  13. wait till winter...:hattip:

    and do it yourself ......

  14. Is the cable correctly adjusted ?

  15. Err the clutch cable? No idea

  16. That's a scary thought but probably a very good idea
