Clutch noise now can't drive

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 12345, Nov 5, 2012.

  1. Just pressed the clutch about to pull away heard a bang noise now I can't get into first, currently waiting for the AA, any ideas what this is?

  2. Do you still have a pedal? (is it the same resistance as usual?)

  3. It's coming up slower but pedal still appears to be doing something but then again it's like putting it into gear without pressing the clutch, clutch cable?

  4. That would be my 1st thought and its the cheapest fix so fingers crossed :)

  5. I've got one in the back too so fingers crossed, cheers man

  6. If it still feels as if something is happening ie some resistance at the pedal it could be that the flexible conduit for the cable has broken adrift at one end ..either where it is clamped to the gearbox or under the rear beam end.

  7. Ok thanks, I'm in a pretty poor position to get out and look so ill leave it to the Aa guy

  8. It is a bit of a grovel to get at but at least its easy to check once there. Good luck I hope its something simple.

  9. Thanks for the help guys I'm home safe and dry!

Was just the bolts on the clutch cable had slipped so needed adjusting. Plus points are he said everything looks good and it's had some money spent such as new starter motor also te van drives better than before! Thanks

  10. Thats good a quick and easy solution.

  11. Thems is the best breakdowns to have! have some karma for a very minor breakdown

I think you should look yourself. I reckon fritt's right. Or could be the gearbox casing snapped where the bracket for the conduit is fixed. Either could be temp fixed by adjusting the clutch cable but sure as eggs is eggs, more trouble will follow...

  13. Well apparently the cable is pretty much new, and there was a wingnut instead if a 10mm bolt which had wiggled loose, so it might just be that but I will have a look. Is it the end at the back of the car? I have a new clutch cable is it the blak plastic bit on that? Sorry bit new to this

It's supposed to have a wing-nut which can't wiggle loose due to it's design.

Look under the van on left side from just in front of rear wheel and you'll see the clutch cable metal conduit that may have detached itself from the torsion tube (Fritt's suggestion). This ends here and it continued rearwards by a length of flexible conduit along the side of the gearbox to a bracket that may have come loose/detached itself from the gearbox (my extra suggestion). Then the cable pokes out and carries on a few inches to the clutch operating arm with the special adjusting wing-nut. I hope the AA man didn't replace this with a nut or you'll have to get another.

I should get yourself a Haynes manual. :)

  16. Sweet thank you very much - ill have a look and assess the situation! No he didn't replace the bolt so should be ok, is it unlikely that the wingnut would work loose then? Need to have a look tomorrow in the light. Thanks again

  17. Ok just read your post properly. Wingnut wouldnt have come loose-Definitely something else up then ill have a look tomorrow

  18. as an update on this I had a look and everything does appear to be attached in it's rightful place, so I guess the AA man was right!

  19. same thing happened to our van
it turned out that the cable had frayed at the pedal connecting point under the belly pan

there was movement but insufficient pressure at the rear meant the clutch wasn't engaging

Quite - they don't stretch until they're about to break and the wing-nut has a square on the back that fits into a square hole on the operating arm. The AA man is wrong this time. ;)
