Is it possible to exchange a late clutch housing onto an early box?

Yes, if you also change the gearbox input shaft.

  3. If you mean the bell housing, you may need a different starter motor.

Ok thanks both for your input

  5. FWIW, my van has a 002 early box attached to the original (late) bellhousing.

@snotty The reason for asking is my late box is whining and been offered an early box but has no clutch release operating shaft so was wondering if possible to exchange bell housings, if not will have to source different box.

  7. Yes, you can swap the bell housings over and keep your late starter. You'll just need a gasket (or maybe just a smear of sealant). Easy job.

The bell housing isn't really part of the "gearbox".
