Borrowed a transmission jack, got a couple of mates to help drop the engine off the stand on to the jack yesterday. Got there this morning to change accelerator cable and put clutch on. Clutch doesn't fit. Diameter of flywheel below. I ordered a 215mm clutch. So also the depth of the clutch looks strange. I have about 22mm clearance in the flywheel for the clutch to fit but when I measure the clutch and pressure plate and the distance it requires, I need 28mm overall. couple of pics below. Do I need a 200mm clutch then? Oh and here's the drowning sorrows bit.
just tuned in for nutella... You do know when the pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel is condenses ,the clutch plate has the match up with the smooth bit on the flywheel ,the gearbox shaft keeps it centered.
Yeah I know mate I was going to use a centring tool and bolt it on but the actual clutch wouldn't fit in the flywheel in the first place. It is about 1.5mm too big all round. I did think about sanding it down. @lost-en-france
You need to measure the shiny face on the flywheel to get the clutch size! What engine is it? What gearbox have you got?
Check the bolt diameters. I just changed from an engine with a 200mm flywheel to a post 1976 engine with a 215mm flywheel. For the T1 at least the bolts are 7mm x20mm on the 215 mm flywheel. They are 8mm bolts on the 200mm flywheel.. I had three 7mm left from a bag of five. I had to raid the bolts that hold the brake drums on the rear wheel which are 7 x 12mm for another three when I decided to bodge it to see if it all ran.
