Clutch cable.

  1. Hi, I recently put a new clutch kit in my 1974 bay and have been driving her for 3 weeks now, in this time I've had to tighten the clutch cable 3 times as engaging gears has become difficult and tightening the cable sorts this issue, I've checked the bowden tube which has the correct bend. Is the problem down to the new clutch kit or is there an issue I'm missing.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

  2. Stretching cable / week clutch springs...
But you say it's a new clutch?

  3. its a new clutch kit (friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing), I've order a new bowden tube to see if this sorts the issue as the one i've got is old and cracked? The clutch spring is good, would you replace the cable? Could it be the other end around the clutch pedal?

  4. I'd say your cable is on it's way out. they start to loose a few strands before actually letting go. Mine let go in the middle of nowhere with the spare hanging on a hook in the garage :(
best MPG ive ever had out of it though :)

Alex VW Heritage and 1973daisey like this.
  5. I should also mention that when changing down gear to 3rd and 2nd I get a slight judder but engaging 1st there is no judder, hoping the bowden tube with make a difference.

  6. Think I'll also replace the cable just to be on the safe side. Cheers

  7. yeah, get both you might as well while youve got it all off. i was amaised at how smooth the clutch felt afterwards hehe!

  8. Make sure you grease the new tube too (missus!)

  9. ^this. I'd say your cable's on the way out. Is the steel cable conduit firmly attached to the rear torsion tube?

  10. Yes the steel conduit is welded tight to the rear torsion tube, waiting for the parts to be delivered will let you know if this solves the problem.

  11. The clutch will bed in over 500 miles or so. As the flywheel wasn't skimmed or replaced it will wear to the shape of the flywheel surface and the cable will need tightening to compensate

  12. I`d go for the cable . Replace .....

and grease well before , and as you ............. slip it in .
