Clutch cable replacement procedure:

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by agaric, Apr 9, 2017.

  1. Hi,

Just to confirm, to replace a clutch cable I need to:
    1. Remove front belly pan
    2. Unscrew gearbox arm (not sure about this one). I'm talking about the bit on the left hand side of the picture. I cannot pull the old cable through it)
    3. Pull the old cable from the front.
    4. Push the new cable back in from the front
    5. Re tighten everything[IMG]
    Is that correct?

I'm having trouble with step 2. The bolts on the gearbox arm are stuck.

  2. It's a while since I did mine but I don't recall doing anything other than remove the wing nut from the clutch arm on the bell housing and then pull it out from the front of the bus after disconnecting it from the pedal. I did attach a string before pulling it out to help pull/guide the new one through but I am not convinced I needed to.

Just undo the wing nut and pull it out

If it doesn't come out pull the outer out of that bracket to make it a straighter run

  4. If you think about it the cable end has to be able to go through the hole or it couldn't have been fitted in the first place. Does your new cable look different? It ought to give you a clue as to what's wrong

  5. The
    Thanks. I'll try that.
The screw end of the cable should be able to slide through all this, right?

  6. Only tried yesterday in the dark. I'm getting at it this morning. With more time to do the job. I'll take the time to check this

  7. I just got your point. Sorry I just woke up and I'm still a bit slow tuesday_wildchild

  8. Ahhh! I'm missing a 8mm spanner to undo the front end of the cable...
Anyone near braunton who would have that?

You can cut the old one off at the pedal end and gaffer tape it tight to the new one to pull it through from the clutch end, undo the bracket to straighten out the S

  10. Found what I needed thanks.
Fighting with the tube at the end of the cable now. Everything else is good

  11. No! I've just an hour installing a cable of the wrong length

  12. Is yours left or right hand drive, I think the cables are different lengths

  13. Right hand drive... About 10cm too long. I'll try to clamp it

  14. Clamping didn't work...:(
    Yellow taxi for us today.
