Clutch cable removal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mattw, Jan 5, 2018.

  1. Trying to disconnect my clutch cable at the front end only so I can drop my beam. Can’t work out how the bloody thing detaches! I’ve removed the pedal assembly but it’s not given me much space as the rear of the cable is still connected to the gearbox.

It seems I need to get the pin out somehow?

    paradox and nicktuft like this.
  3. And you need to replace your clutch cable, it's wearing through where the pin goes

  4. That looks well worm. Maybe worth cutting off and replacing. Could go ping at any mo.
    Beat me to it @pkrboo

  5. Thanks guys, might just cut it off then. Presumably replacement isn’t too tricky when I have all the beam gubbins off anyway?

This lowering job keeps adding loads of other jobs to my list but I suppose it’s good to get it all sorted at once!

  6. Looks as if the clutch pedal part where the cable joins is worn too. Put a new cable on it saves messing about putting new end clevis on.
To unhook the cable unclipped the clevis pin turn slightly and just push out.

  7. Dont cut it off just take the pin out. Your bale is about to break and it will look like the pics below[IMG][IMG][IMG]

  9. try pushing the cable forwards looks like the pin is trapped in the cable part where it is starting to open up an pinching the pin.

Have you slackened the wingnut at the gearbox?

Take the lever off at the front, take the cable off the gearbox end, inspect and replace it all. Much easier out of the bus.

If the hole in the cable end is worn then the pin will be worn with a step in it locking it in place and the lever will have a notch. Its all been finely ground with jewellers rouge abrasive aka Fe2O3 or red iron oxide.

Just be glad your clutch cable didnt fail 30 miles into your big camping trip.

Grease up the replacement and buy a pedal pan cover either a tin one secondhand or a fibreglass one from nomorerustybits.com.

And while you are lowering it dont forget to flip the front ARB if you havent otherwise it hangs down and catches on speed bumps and road camber.

  12. Thanks guys. Just found a new cable and kit in the box of spares that came with the van!

I think for now I’m gonna cut the cable then when I lower the back I’ll sort the cable replacement when access to the rear is better
