Clutch cable mounting bracket and adjustment

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by olires, Nov 2, 2015.

  1. This is two related questions in one post.

Firstly, a previous owner has fabricated the bracket that holds the flexible clutch cable tube near the adjuster. See the picture. They've not done a bad job, but it's at slightly the wrong angle and this is where my clutch cable snapped.

Does anybody know this bracket's proper name, or where to buy a real replacement?

Secondly, the clutch cable I used (432 600 07 15, made in Poland and supplied by JK) and the cable that was on the vehicle before (German-made), seem to be too long. When the clutch is adjusted it is almost at the end of the thread. I've put a (temporary and unsuitable) spacer in there. Do you think the bracket might not be putting enough "kink" in the cable?

    My van is a 1978 2-litre.

    Any ideas?

  2. I did my clutch cable recently, yes it ended up right at the end of the thread.
I beleive other people have put washers behind the wingnut to pull it back a bit

  3. You can buy the "proper" brackets from the usual suspects (try VWH). Packing the end of the cable is an official VW mod (except they called them "shims", not "washers").

  4. Looked for one myself a month ago couldn't find one anywhere, eventually asked on the forums and got a second hand one and refurbed it.

  5. Thanks guys. I did try the "usual suspects" and couldn't find one, but I did wonder if that was down to me not knowing its name.

  6. I'm sure I've seen them. @Alex VW Heritage ?

Your bracket is there because at least one of the threads for the bracket into the case is beyond repair, or the repairer didn't have the means. It's probably fine but if you want to replace it with a standard one, be ready to deal with the knackered thread in the gearbox casing.

Most peeps put the spacers (washers) under the upper end of the bowden tube, leaving the square shaped nut to do it's job. M12 is what you want.

  8. Fantastic, Zed. I didn't think of putting the spacer there. That's a much better idea.

Always the sign of deeper knowledge to know why something might have been done. I'd just naively assumed the previous bracket had broken. :)

  10. Same issue with mine, I have yet to fit it as I need to sort the case threads out PO issue.

The threads are not very deep which doesn't help and the upper one tends to get severely damaged ending as acting as a wobbly locating pin while the lower less stressed one hangs on for a while. The solution in the OP's pics is pretty good!
