Cleaning quails

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Rustydiver, Feb 18, 2012.

  1. I've got a couple of quails coming tomorrow what is the best way of plucking and cleaning them.

Not going to eat straight away so is it ok to whack them in the freezer.

  2. Ment to say that they will be dispatched when get them

Skin them, feathers on - much quicker, less mess and good for the freezer. Shouldn't take long - they're only ickle. Gut them obviously, and do it in your garden not the house as they'll be smelly.

  4. take to butcher, bung him a few quid and get him to do it

  5. Thanks was going to do them in the sink like the trout and salmon, but I wont now. Will save it for outside.
Never done our feather friends before skinning them I take it you just have a sharp knife and peel back the feather and skin. Slice up the cavity lightly and pull out the innards. Cut the breats off, small ones at that wash freeze.

  13. I'm a townie, crap at making fires being the bird is so small how long will it take to cook over a lighter.

  14. Slit the vent open and remove the innards

Chop of the wings, legs and head

Dont bother trying to pluck them just skin them its easier and quicker

There will be next to nowt smell wise from a small bird like that

Now squirrels they honk for the size of em

  15. Squirrels the mind boggles.

  16. Grey ones not red

They taste like partridge dude and a plate in a london restraunt would be quite expensive

  17. I've had BBQ squirrel & squirrel currey........mmmmmmmmmmmmm nice!

Didn't have to prep them though - I used to have a mate who worked on a SSSI and his job was to trap them as vermin.
