Seriously - it`s easy . Top tip is to ALWAYS keep the filter housing level when you take it out and set it down on the floor otherwise the oil will pour out if it`s tipped past 45 degrees or so - ask me how i found that one out
As an Aircraft maintenance engineer, it just went against the grain, I'm sure that was not what VW had in mind when they said refill with oil to the correct level. How do you inspect what has been collected in the filter, if you can't see the bottom! Tony
But what can usefully be gleaned from inspecting the sand through clean oil rather than old black stuff? Or ideed inspecting the contents at all? Not like you're going to find bits of bearing in it is it? Just muck from the atmosphere...
If you can see whats in the bottom, then you can decide wether it worth cleaning it out, or leaving it. I'm not talking about driving around UK roads, but operating in west Africa and crossing the Sahara, which was 1,000 miles driving off road. I actually ran two oil bath filters in series, the first one was a MAN Diesel engine filter, which picked up 98% of the dust/sand, which then fed into the intake of the VW unit. The VW filter was just about pristine when I check it out back in England. Tony
